DESCRIPTIVE TEXT
What is descriptive?
Descriptive text is a kind of text that describe the characteristic of :
- a person
- an animal
- a place
- thing
- etc
The purpose
To describe a particular person, animal, place or thing.
Generic Structure
It mainly consists of two main parts:
- Identification
This part introduces where and who the subject being described.
- Description
Supporting paragraph which describes in detail, so the reader can 'see' and 'feel'
the subject.
For example: the qualities, appearances, uses, habits, etc.
Grammatical Features
- Adjectives (small,big, beautiful, ugly, clever, soft, hard, thick, thin......etc)
- Pronouns (He, She, It, They, We, I, You, him, her, them, us, me)
- Verbs
- Present tense (sometimes it uses past tense if the things to be described doesn't exist anymore)
- Adverbs
- Noun Phrase (very thick fur, a beautiful young lady)

National Monument

Read the following text!
The National Monument (Monumen nasional) is a 132-m tower in the center of Merdeka square, Central Jakarta. it symbolizes the fight for Indonesia's independence. The monument consists of a 117.7 m obelisk on a 45 m square platform at a height of 17 m.
The towering monument symbolizes the philosophy of lingga and yoni. Lingga resembles a pestle (alu) and yoni resembles a mortar (lesung), two importants items in Indonesian agricultural tradition.
The construction began in 1961 under the direction of President Soekarno and the monument was opened to the public in 1975. It is topped by a flame covered with gold foil. The monument and museum are open daily from 08.00 a.m. - 03.00 p.m. throughout the week, except for the last Monday of the month, when the museum is closed.
